So, today, the Park's new ride was announced as Galactica. Here is what we know so far:
The ride will replace Air however, Galactica will still use the same station, track and we're assuming crafts as Air. Riders will be given the option to experience the ride through Virtual Reality headsets if they wish to do by wearing one of the new Virtual Reality headsets that will be attatched to the seat.
Alton Towers marketing Director, Gill Riley said:
“Galactica uses ground breaking technology to give riders a breathtaking and completely unique rollercoaster experience. Tim Peake captured the imagination of millions of Brits last year when he set off on his mission to the International Space Station – and now our visitors can become astronauts too.
There is nowhere else in the world that people can experience the feeling of a flying rollercoaster combined with soaring through the universe. For two minutes, our guests will be transported into space and we believe Galactica showcases the future for theme parks around the world – it’s a complete game changer!”
The Virtual Reality part of this ride has been created by Figment Productions who have worked with Merlin many times in the past on attractions such as the Blackpool and Orlando Eye, SEALIFE and Warwick Castle.
For those people who do not wish to use the Virtual Relity headsets can ride Galactica without them.
A promotional video has been released for this ride which shows a lot of shots of space-y things (a rocket taking off, drawings of spacecraft and aliens) and possibly a preview of what we will see during the ride through the headsets. You can watch that video here:
A website has also been lauched called 'Galactica Tours' which shows the planets that the riders will fly by during their ride. You can visit that websote by clicking here.
We will update this post as soon as we find out any more information
